On the morning of July 30, 2025, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. The epicenter was recorded at a depth of 19.3 km, about 125-133 km southeast of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. This is the largest geological event in the region in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake quickly generated a tsunami of 3-4 meters high, which hit the coastal areas of Russia's Far East. Severe flooding was reported in the port town of Severo-Kurilsk, forcing the emergency evacuation of about 2,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only affecting Russia, the tsunami spread to coastal areas of Japan, Hawaii, Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. In Japan, areas near Tokyo received evacuation warnings, in anticipation of the approaching tsunami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the Pacific, countries have issued tsunami warnings, mainly in areas such as Hawaii and Alaska, where sea levels have risen significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kamchatka authorities reported some minor injuries and damage to many structures, while the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry is actively assessing the damage and evacuating residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, the earthquake intensity was rated by USGS at 8.0 - 8.7, then adjusted to 8.8, emphasizing the seriousness of the incident and requiring high vigilance from countries in the affected area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earthquake is reminiscent of major natural disasters such as the 1952 magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Kamchatka and the 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake in northeastern Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
